Hola, Rosetta!

So the new Hey Rosetta! album is about to be unleashed, and by the looks of it there's a lot of deserved interest and praise already. Check out the new flash website, where the entire album is up for streaming. Back in the day, I would've been all over that, dubbing it onto my tapedeck. But those days are behind us (just barely), especially so for our brethren. I tried to order it from MapleMusic, but they want 8 bones to ship it down south. I sent shirts to Australia for less. Granted, it took a quarter of a year.

So because i want the physical disc, I'll probably wait to buy it off the guys if/when I head up north + east. I'm pretty high on the new sounds so far. The mix is fantastic, and the construction sounds at once looser (more relaxed) and tighter. And the harmonies are more elaborate and keep you on your toes. The first track is an absolute roaring beast, and I think lyrically the record's slightly less romantic, and shows Tim hitting fresh territory to accompany the new sounds.

Check out the write ups in the Telegram and The Scope. [which has a cover picture that looks like the band's @ Don & Marilyn's pleasant backyard.]

pt. 2 of the Telegram's is not online for some dumb reason, but I have mom and dad's online version that I can email if anyone wants.
Peace on the patio,
Peace in the shed.

Shilo Clark Penney, 1994-2008

It is with great sadness that I update this blog. I write to inform you all that the barking menace at the Penney residence passed away peacefully today at the vet's office. We discovered he had cancer in March, when a routine surgery to remove a fat lump proved that it was cancer instead. He did well for awhile but this past week he took a turn for the worse. We decided to not let him suffer and made an appointment to let him go today.

He is being cremated tomorrow and buried in our backyard. This is the first pet loss for me and I just wanted to let you all know as you have all hung with Shilo in the past years.

Rest in Peace little guy.

Man make bread

So, looks like the unbelievably ideal spring weather in Central Texas is about to start "packin' heat."  The mornings are still beautiful and cool, but somewhere around 9:30 or 10, it gets hot-ish.  Record breaking temps in the 90s for three days this week are forecasted.

Thankfully, the heat helps a man make bread.  After trying my hand at a natural yeast sourdough, and failing, I've moved on to regular yeast bread to excellent results.

The recipe came from a piece in the NYTimes, and involves a Dutch Oven which we just purchased because of Nina's obsession with this guy on tv (pbs) who cooks in the field (his shack in the woods) using dutch ovens.  I believe her obsession revealed itself best when she jealously remarked "all he has is dutch ovens!"  To each her own, I s'pose.

And I'm grateful for her obsession, because this piece of steel cooks like a beast.  If you're in the poor house, or soon to be (Janes), this bread is for you.

In other news:

My uncle Dave was just awarded an honourary Doctor of Letters from Memorial, which he received this past weekend at the Grenfell convocation.  Here's a video of it.

Infinity mpg

I have, finally, joined the ranks of the self-propelled! Here's my new ride:

Biomega Amsterdam

Things that are sweet: no chain! 8 speed, pretty heavy, and so far I've maxed out in 6th gear among the cars. There are too many lights to really build up speed to go faster than topping out 6th gear.

I am redickly out of shape, but even so this is the fastest way for me to get to school. My commute when walking is 40 minutes, on the streetcar it is usually about 30, but this morning it took just 19 minutes on the ol' bike. We have a winner!

The only big downside: I hate cars even more now. :) Oh, and "saddle" issues.

Famous for the public good

IN THE LATEST chapter of my upcoming infamy, there reads a brief addendum alleging to my contribution to the public good this Saturday, May the 10th, via letter to the St. John's Evening Telegram, wherein, I have some haberdashery to take up with the school board of the Avalon Peninsula.

If you're in town and have a copy of Saturday's paper laying about, feel free to check the "letters to the editor" section, wherein you shall find one from a Mr. L. Quinton, residing, Austin, Texas, these united states.  It is of no great import, save for the future of the downtown core, its residents, culture, children, and community. But, like I said, no big deal.

Unfortunately, they also took it upon their liberty to ADD a grammar mistake, and take out an "important" point.  Nevertheless, should you choose to frame it, I suggest doing so a place that allows privacy, like a closet.  But frame away.

If you're "away,"  (or faking going to Albania for a few days), you can check it out here.

Galactus: Earth Sucker!

Hello Chums!

Came across this article about a taser party:

This is an unusual party, to say the least. There's food, but no alcohol, and much of the time is spent listening to disturbing statistics.

The lone male party guest is Kevin Sailor, an off-duty police officer, brought in to demonstrate how a Taser works.

Like many a partygoer who doesn't really know anyone, he spends much of the time on his own, slightly awkwardly standing with his (soft) drink. But he holds court later, when explaining the device and how best to use it.

He's a firm believer that Tasers are not permanently harmful - but civil liberties groups voice concerns over this.

Also, a story about a sink hole ....

.... turned my mind to one Galactus, earth(-sized) sucker.

After the recent and quite unexpected upswell of interest in the life, times (--dare I say, life-times?!) and good deeds of Bea Arthur, I feel it incumbent upon myself to provide you pachucos with more and greater subjects of biographical curiosity. None is greater than Galan of Taa-- Devourer of Worlds-- GALACTUS!!

Compliments and jocular responses are appreciated-- Bea Arthur, eat your fucking heart out!

Ps. I've yet to resurrect the lovable "I'm Lostie" character, but stay tuned... (Who's still watching the Lost by the way??)
