Mission impossihuh?

There were people *lined up* at the Blockbuster Video on uberposh Robsonstrasse this evening, waiting to buy Mission Imposible III. What?

Does anyone actually care about Tom Cruise anymore? Was it even a good movie? I remember barely any fanfare when it was released in theatres. I can only assume the people who were frothing at the mouth to get it were members of the Church of Scientology. Agree or disagree?

Brat worst?

Given Jill's revelation, which is now more appropriate:

"Brat selling brat."

OR

"The worst selling the wurst."

What's everyone else getting for Christmas?

Earthquake Weather!

10:30 pm, Oct. 22nd, Melbourne, Australia, there was experienced by jill and tom an...

EARTHQUAKE!!!!!!!!

What do you fools make of that?? That's right. According to Australian Earthquake News:

2006 October 22, Caulfield, Vic, ML 2.9
1236 UTC, 145.03°E, 37.87°S, normal depth [MEL]
(Sunday October 22, 10:36 pm AEST)
A small earthquake occurred beneath the suburb of Caulfield, about 8 km southeast of the city of Melbourne. It was felt in the southeast suburbs of Melbourne, including Clayton, St Kilda, Elsternwick and South Yarra, with some reports from beyond Dandenong. It was too small to cause any damage.

It took us a couple of days to process, since out internal organs were rearranged from the shock, and, although none of our pictures fell, we have no pictures, SO, it could have been disasterous, only our poverty saved us. Yessir, as the proud survivors of a minor shock, we would like to say we've rearranged our priorities and will now eat more take out food than before, work less, quite our jobs selling franks etc. Changes for the better, that's the name of the earthquake game.

Please report your pitiful (in comparison) experiences with the earthshaking force of movements of the earth below. Who but us has weathered the ol' 2.9? [What the janeses do behind closed doors is none of our business, unless you want to spill now you're out of the city??]

Kaneyezie did it again

Not that I could be accused of too little a presence on this find blog, BUT I take my duties seriously, and so, philbert, here's my australian update. Everybody sip on your orange pekoe tetley and enjoy...

This har's a picto of cy twombly's sculpture about thermopylae, a shoutout to that other blog. In other news, my excellent cousin andrew formerly living in auckland has taken us up on the offer to stay here as our second (after melanie slater) houseguest. who will be next? YOU? well, whoever it is has some extremely high standards to surmount: andrew's gift of appreciation for taking him into our tiny sub-home is not merely a hotel room in sydney, not even JUST two tickets to see "irish rockers" you-too, but, also, and in addition, the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Kaneyezie, that's right, "chi-city mc" kanye west. very strangely, kanye is opening for said irish rockers. why? just because he appeals to white people doesnt mean he doesnt appeal to other colored people! so why is he opening a concert only white people are likely to attend? well, maybe said irish-rockers have a broader fan base than i thought. it's not like they're the cranberries! is it?!! anyhoo, this is indeed excellent news, since i will have to miss the jay-z show that's coming here in a few weeks due to the extravagant cost, so now it's all good.

in other news, im still in the swing of asking, wanna frank? do YOU wanna frank? jill's almost done her course, now she needs a visa. australia is land of many contradictions: for example, the sky's always yellow whether its rain or shine. more truthfully, cockatoos are a daily sight. there are joined by the diminutive parakeet as the winged joybringers of my toilsome day. they lift me up as josh grobin would say.

what else about this freaky place? the departed came out a few days ago and we wolfed it down with an extra serving of popcorn, in grand cherry-chewing nicholsonian manner. (i suppose that's more of a transnational phenomenon). we've also resigned ourselves to staying here for christmas, part of jill's concerted grinchian efforts (isnt it???). Cory knows how i deal with that.

i think i've said enough:

"demand me nothing, what you know you know,
from this time forth i never will speak word." as old man iago says..... who can deal with that?

No Oscar yet... In the meantime, amuse yourself with this...

Just a quick update:

The movie began filming on Monday. We've had 4:30 call times both days. Monday was solely dedicated to us rowers....we're filming a bunch of small-ish sequences, as well as two larger ones involving Viking funerals!! The boat is a 60 ft long Viking-ship replica built by a Danish Viking expert. It, and the oars, are built mostly out of plywood, so we spent many hours on Monday just testing it to make sure it won't actually sink. After we got comfortable with rowing the damn thing, some of the minor cast members joined us for a spin. We couldn't help but notice the large ammount of wiring inside the ship - one of the crew has experience with demolition, and concluded that, at some point, the ship will be blown up! Sweet!!!

Today was a bit dull...the weather was absolutely shitty (yesterday was perfect), and included a hail storm at 6:30 am. The director decided to film as much of the "village" scene as possible, while us oarsmen got the shitty end of the stick...we pretty much just waited around in the freezing cold for 12 hours waiting for the weather to clear up, which it never did. The most exciting part of the day was most definitely the 4:30am bus ride to Lark Harbor, during which I chatted it up with Jon Hurt's double! A most fascinatingly drunk man! (John Hurt, by the way, was Chancellor Sutler in V for Vendetta and S.R. Hadden in Contact). He was absolutely fascinated by my "House of Hate" tale. Anyways, when we weren't sitting around, we were practicing hoisting/lowering the sail while still anchored at the dock. It went pretty smoothly, but the director really has to learn the difference between port and starboard!

Not much else to report on...tomorrow's supposed to be good sailing weather, so we're hoping to get most of the scenes done. Cameras are strictly forbidden and "will be confiscated", but I'm going to try to sneak a shot or two. I'll keep you huddled.

In the meantime, amuse yourself with the sequel to one of Phil-dawg's most memorable posts.

Random questions to promote further blogging of substance

Here are a variety of questions directed at people who should be blogging more, as well as a longer diatribe on the state of my own masters work.

Jacob: You're doing a second undergrad degree???? What. The. Fuck? Through discussions with other huddlers, we have concluded that you are insane.

Cory: What is your status? And, for sekret reasons, are you still living with your parents?

Matthew: I don't even know if you're alive anymore, but what is your take on Les Habs (this can also go out to Janes) this season? I'm worried about this goalie situation myself. I think Huet deserves the time to get his groove back, and they should trade Abby to someone for a bit of scoring. Or something. Oh yeah, and how's that whole law thing going?

Jill & Tom: talk about Australia a bit more! I'm sure it is in some ways freaky and interesting that aren't obvious to those of us who aren't there.

Three pond barrens bloggers: assholes!

Me:

I've spent the last year working between my lab and a microbiology group at UBC, trying to get a joint project whereby we take cells that are capable of pulling DNA across their cell walls to actually do this with one piece of DNA at a time while I tug on the other end with my tweezers. Suffice to say there have been a large number of problems along the way, and to date I've not been able to get the cells to do this. I'm only a masters student, and should be finished now, but I'm nowhere near the end yet. In fact, I've just switched projects to something involving single-stranded DNA molecules that can base-pair with themselves and thus have interesting force-extension relations, in an effort to get something to work so that I can finish by the end of this school year (or at least, before September 2007). So I'll be a year late, but hopefully something will have worked.

As you can imagine it has been depressing for me, and I've found it hard to stay motivated and want to come to work every day. Having switched projects though, hopefully I can get more in a groove and actually get some results. Fingers crossed.

bus bloggin'

to your certain amazement, I am now live bloggin' - bus style. Since my car's outta commission until I get a frikkin' job, I've been kickin' it bus-stylz back&forth to Nina's place in Austin a couple times per week. Turns out it's cheapter than gas anyway, AND, more importantly, the real reason I'm taking the bus?: because it has Wi-Fi! And i'm using it right now- in your computerFaaace!
Aside: Holy crap- so the bus driver is a crazy old man (ex-military for sure) who wears a Cowboy hat, and talks like a mix between the Godfather and Tom Waits. Apparently, as I look out the side window here, he just got in some sort of non-verbal argument with this white car, and for some completely inexplicable reason decided it would be a great idea to go ahead and pass him on the shoulder. Of the interstate. In the middle of traffic. In front of a cop. Ahh, well.

said bus may look something like this. Ouuuuh look, a Dairy Queen.

The real reason i'm busbloggin'? Rick Mercer is hilarious again. In website-form.

I do not urge you to read this post on Conrad Black- it's too hilarious to recommend.

P.S. What's everyone up to this weekend? TALK to me babays.

Vanier is. . .

Found this today.

Mind is blown. (?)

The Body & Other Speakers of Note

I should obviously be doing something more productive right now- like studying for my conflict exam- but y'know, a lil' belated blogging is calling.

Thought I'd update y'all on a couple of things I've seen lately (yes, the epic ACL day 3 post will eventually come). But in the meantime, here's what's been on the Southwest Texas campus:

Last night, as part of the Common Experience (a neat program to unite incoming Freshmen), Edward James Olmos came to speak. He's the teacher from "Stand and Deliver"- and was a very entertaining and dynamic speaker- although he has a tendency to go a little long. His main topics: education of minorities/alternate points of view, and their portrayal in TV and film. (okay, he obviously didn't look 'exactly' like that ;) . . .But . . .close.

More interestingly, and more importantly, I also got the chance to see these characters:

That's right- pictured here are Kinky Friedman, the next governor of the great state of Texas, and his supporter, Jesse 'the body' Ventura, former governor of Minnesota. I was the last guy they let in to Evans Auditorium on campus, and man, it was pretty awesome seeing the Kinkster and the Body. Jesse Ventura appears as though he could crack me into pieces with a single twitch of his third and fourth fingers. So, I was glad to be a little further back. He said some great things, about Clinton avoiding the presedntial debates in '96 because he had such a huge lead, about the Republicans and Dems. banning together to keep out third parties (namely Ross Perot) from the debate after they took over the League of Women Voters, the group that formerly decided who would debate whom. And he also just looked huge and cool.

Kinky was hilarious, and very insightful, as usual- he defines the no-nonsense approach, and I feel as though he will really be willing to step up and provide leadership in areas that I am concerned about- especially education.

After the speeches, Kinky and the Body walked out through the Quad with a gaggle of reporters and signed things and talked to students for over an hour. You don't see the ridiculously pompous Rick Perry (R-Governor) doing that.

Here's Kinky's latest commercial. What d'y'all think? (Keep in mind he's toned his usual act down quite a bit for TV).

Movie cat

Quidi is starting to get fairly big (at least, relative to her size when we first got her but two short months ago!), so here's a movie we took this afternoon for posterity. Note cameo by Philip's miscellaneous body parts and the new computer sitting on the table. (Also, warning, the AVI file is ~50 megs or so.)
