Resolutions/Revolutions 2006

Well I thought I would put down my Resolutions for the New Year in physical form, because it will take a Revolution for me to actually accomplish them ;)

I am more set in my ways now than ever before. Most of my ways being, of course, harmful to my health and head.

For those missing Downtown St. John's in the Winter and Christmas Season, I hope you like the shot. it was taken, of course, with my New Camera! thanks Santa! hooray!

So, I've set the bar deliberately low this year, in an effort to actually follow through. Because, you know, people always ask if you've got any resolutions... and I generally reply with some bullshit, made-up-on the spot-answer. And damnit, I have Standards! They're Low... but they're there all the same!

So here goes;
  1. Become Punctual.
(please don't laugh too hard...but until I move to Mexico, my lack of respect for 'clock time' is hurtin me, man!)
  2. Exercise.
I am So terribly out of shape. It hurts.

What's everyone else got? Post it up.

I have some other things I want to do...be more giving (I have been doing a lot of 'taking' these days) and also tap my creativitiy more. I think a variety of creative experiences is a very good thing, and I'm pretty lamed out these days.

Totally unrelated to any of this, I finally saw Taylor yesterday, and she is doing really well. Living in Stuttgart, auf Deutchland! I'm jalouse! I'd like to live in Germany for a while.
laters all... and Happy New Year! 2006> here we come bizatch!

Post yer loot!

How was everyone's haul? I got the standard issue clothing, a couple of gift cards (already used, chapters.ca expecting delivery January 2nd), and the best of all, from my better half, The Complete Calvin & Hobbes! It is printed on fabulous paper, the binding is beautiful, there's that "quality book" glue smell that I adore, and the comics are as hilarious as ever. It's also about 10 pounds, but worth every one. Susan tells me they had 4 left at the Chapters on Granville @ Broadway, and as I look on the web now they seem to be all sold out. *phew* :)

The only thing I'm missing this year are friends and family (*nudge, nudge* you goons should come and visit us this year!)! I hope everyone else is having an awesome holiday, and post yer loot!

To all my friends working in politically correct organizations:

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all . . and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make Canada great, (not to imply that Canada is necessarily greater than any other country), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or choice of computer platform of the wishee.
By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. (This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.)

And to everybody else:

MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Randomization

For everyone's enjoyment, Ebert has posted his top 10 films of the year, check that out. It's been a pretty rough year at the movies for me, in that I have seen exactly none of the movies he lists.
At least some of you have seen Kong, at no.8
All this makes me wish I saw more movies... who remembers the Tuesday Night Movie club?!!!

I have done Zero Christmas shopping.

But am terribly enjoying the Christmas Parties! Hoorah!

I have made some progress though, put up the tree today, and added lights. Nice.
We also have lights running the length of our driveway now, thanks to dad, and a little to me.

This is not a picture of those lights, but a good example of an interesting site that shows pictures from cameras tossed in midair check out cameratoss.blogspot, there are a ton such Randomized pics, I just picked some with Christmas colours in mind- this is from the Christmas tree in Austin, apparently.

Matt-Dog gets home tomorrow! Good times for all.
I want to thank Hinch-dog for not puking in my car. Hooray!

Mushaboom' (by Feist) is so addicting! as is the new album of Modest Mouse covers by the band Sun Kil Moon... also, anyone heard Rogue wave?I'm finally listening to all the music i had accumulated this fall.
Got my hands on Hey Rosetta's EP... great job by all. Nice to actually know the names of the songs we sing alone with.
I can't find anything to read in my house. Trying a new Mordecai Richler.
Can't wait for suggestions for Christmas gifts... or music.... or books.... or movies. peace.

Class Dismissed!

So, everyone else has posted by now and I felt it was my turn! Kindergarten is going fabulously and my 35 students seem happy in the classroom! Parent/Teacher interviews went well and report cards are done with for another three months! We just finished our Christmas concert which was a musical based on the story of Jesus' birth in a stable. My Kinders practiced hard and spent two days this week coming in together in the morning (that was havoc!) to produce a very nice song while dressed as sheep and shepherds. Here they are!!

So all's well in Kinderland and I'm muchly enjoying my holidays (especially since I don't have to spent it with...I mean, even though I miss everyone back home!)

Class dismissed!

Science nerdery

If you were dying to know what's been going on in my lab these days (c'mon, humour me!), head on over to BioCurious to read my latest post! Here's a snapshot of my optical tweezers in action to wet the apetite!

Kong Sized Fun

Hello everybody! And good work to LukeASS for getting this thing off the ground. I'm sick and tired of communicating via means like the telephone and in person conversations. If all goes well I'll never have to see any of you ever again. Speaking of which, the first of the seasons festivities will begin tomorrow with T-Bizzle returning from his adventures in flower land, and we will be off to see the over three hour, soon to be classic, King Kong. It's too bad that Matthew won't be here to watch Lise's debut starring role with us. Oh well. Christmas promises to be a good break for us all. If everything goes as planned, most of the time will be spent as demonstrated in the picture. It's too bad that everybody isn't coming home though. As for me, not much is new. Looking for work has produced nothing significant, so for now I'm the most educated painter working for Prince Contracting. I'll change my tune in the new year.... enough is enough. Anyways, I'll see most of you later. Until then, we'll have to muddle on some how.

Jacob

p.s. Sue I didn't know you had a part in Narnia as the little girl.

Year in Review

Word is born, fools. Hope everyone's having a fine start to December. Mine's looking pretty good. 2 Finals tomorrow, finish work today, and I'm done! Of course, that means Christmas Shopping... for family, Nina and friends. And Damn... I have to pack. I'll try and do that before 6 am on Thursday.
Went out last night with Courtney Macintosh (the rower) from St. John's, and had a great time. It was her birthday, and we had some good punch, and heard some stories about a homeless man sleeping outside her friend's window (hooray!) among other treasures. I got her a pair of six-packs...Moosehead and Blue... pretty cool that you can find them here, but sad there aren't more.
Here's an awesome picture via Phil's site: photos in super-fast-motion and some finnegaling catch the (sound?) waves from a gun.
A few notes:
  • I can't stop laughing about Coco Butter: So Coco... are you gonna share your "Drink-a-thon" proposal with everyone? or must it remain in the private domain? If you don't have any ethical objections, you could at least post that one mail before your hiatus until spring '06. Those who haven't seen it (has anyone not seen the hilarious email?) are missing out (I can do it if you don't have time... just say the word).
  • I'm compiling the Year in Review 2005 CD.... And Taking Suggestions. Have any good ones?
  • Any Requests from Tejas? (Tequila, etc.?)

Oh great, a blog

Well I guess I'll make a post to this despite my utter disdain for blogs. But don't expect constant updates from my life in the fast lane, I don't have nearly enough time to add all the exciting things I'm up to. I'm a little concerned that everyone can see all the posts, how do we talk about the people who can read it? I mean, I can't say how I really feel about Jill, Arielle, Sue and Phil not coming home for Christmas because that might hurt their feelings. And what about Janes' decision to go into education, how can I point out the obvious that...well um, good move Janes, I'm behind you all the way! Hmm, can we make anonymous posts? Luke, you're not letting Nina see this are you, 'cause I've got a thing or two to tell you about that one. That's all for now, stay tuned for my next post, coming March 2006! Do I have to sign this or does it do it automatically?

you too can be reduced to a caricature of your former self

Greetings from chilly St. John's, where it is now pitch black at 4:38pm. Oh the joys of winter! A little more rum in my eggnog should cushion the december duldrums, at least until the wave of Christmas parties sweeps us all away into a drunken state of denial.

I'd like to draw your attention to a swell little site that I've been a fan of for quite some time. Some of you may already know about it - it's site that allows you to create Southpark characters in your own image, or in the image of anyone you like. (See mine below). It's pretty sweet how accurate you can get, especially we a few added touches in Photoshop. Anyway, if anyone tries it, post your cartoon counterpart, and let's see how we'd all look in 2D.

Looking forward to the merry alcoholic season, and to the return of all those far away.

State of the Blog Update: Progress...?

Hey all. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has joined thus far. It's only day 4 and not counting myself, we're averaging 1.5 new members per day! That's pretty damn good. As well, we're averaging over 35 visits a day, which is another good sign. Now, if there are "lurkers" out there (to take Phil's word), that's cool too, but of course, we'd rather everyone get's involved. So go hound those who are unawares, or ignoring it.

(Or must we name names?)

So Gracias for joining, and writing.

In other news: added a 'blurb' of my own invention. Not especially happy with its position (blocking the pic), or colour, but I like the general vibe. (Phil, maybe it'd be better in a sidebar?) Looking for Suggestions. . .

In my ramblings, found a great photo archive of 1880's st. john's here.and what I think is a pretty remarkable pic of downtown (Duckworth area) from another era.

crazy, non? the construction is completely different, stone instead of wood, and incredibly attractive (colonial?) architecture, but the shell is there.
*all for now, Peace until later (8 days to go!)

Snow what?

As some of you in the East might know (and much to your delight, probably), the West has been having absolutely miserable weather. Like, St. John's miserable. I kid you not. The view out my front door the other day was the following:

This must be punishment for leaving Newfoundland to begin with! Up at SFU, on Burnaby Mountain (elevation 400m), there's a good 10-15cm sitting on the ground. What province am I in again?!?

Hey By's!

Well, although I failed to get "first post" honours (curse you, Jill!), I can at least sleep comfortably knowing that I DID, however, manage to get "first sign-up" honours!

So this blog thing's a great idea...kudos to Luke! Now I can finally let you all know that I have NOT, in fact, dropped off the face of the earth! :P

Anyways, I've got papers to write, exams to cram for, and then more papers to write, so I must depart. By the way...YES, the rumours are true....I AM doing Education. More on that later.

Oh, and as to the "blurb" about The Holyrood Huddle blog, I don't have any ideas at the moment... but might I suggest it somehow includes the infamous term "Acquaintance Group"?

  • ideas for pictures to adorn the sides!

    Happy websiting!
